Four Seasons Desroches Island

Our honest verdict

Desroches is the gateway to the outer islands and a destination in its own right. Four Seasons runs a polished, full-service operation on a flat coralline island with 14km of beaches and a house reef that is almost unfairly good. The cycling infrastructure alone — a network of paths through the interior — makes it unlike any other private island in the archipelago.

Desroches sits 230 kilometres southwest of Mahé at the edge of the Seychelles Bank, which means the water around it has a clarity and a depth that the inner granitic islands cannot match. The house reef drops to 25 metres within a five-minute swim of the beach and the diversity of species on the outer wall — Napoleon wrasse, hammerhead sharks, dogtooth tuna, and the largest barracuda schools we have seen in the Seychelles — is exceptional by any standard.

The Four Seasons operation here is the most complete full-service resort on this list. 71 villas and suites, a water sports centre that includes kite surfing instruction, PADI diving, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding, a spa that is genuinely well-staffed and substantively programmed, and a kids' programme that is structured enough to actually occupy children rather than simply provide a space for them. For multi-generational groups who want a private island but cannot agree on a single activity preference, Desroches resolves the argument.

The fly-fishing at Desroches is less well known than Alphonse but is serious and productive. The outer flats, accessible by skiff in fifteen minutes from the beach, hold bonefish, permit, and giant trevally in water that is rarely more than knee-deep. The guide team has been on this flat for years. The kite surfing conditions on the western lagoon — consistent trade winds in the southeast season with a sheltered, flat-water lagoon — are the most reliable in the Seychelles.

Not ideal for guests who want dramatic granite scenery or a property within easy reach of the inner islands. Desroches is 230km from Mahé and the remoteness is intrinsic to the experience. The 35-minute charter flight is manageable but it does mean that spontaneous day trips to Praslin or La Digue are not feasible.

Signature experiences here

Fly-fishing on the outer flats

The flats east and north of the island hold bonefish and permit in water that clears to the sandy bottom at fifteen metres. The guide team goes out at first light and returns with the tide.

Kite surfing on the lagoon

The western lagoon provides sheltered, flat-water conditions with consistent trade wind in the southeast season. The instruction programme runs from complete beginner to advanced. The most common guest reaction: "I should have done this years ago."

Guided cycling tour

The island-wide path network covers 14 kilometres through coconut groves, beach sections, and the interior mangrove fringe. The guide provides commentary on the ecology as you go. Two hours, comfortable pace.

PADI dive on the house reef

The outer reef wall drops to over 25 metres within a short boat ride. The dive team is PADI-certified and runs programmes from discover scuba to divemaster-level courses.

Sunset dhow sailing

A traditional dhow departs from the beach at 5pm and follows the southern coastline. Sundowners on board, snorkelling stop at the southern point, back by dark.

Turtle nesting observation

Between October and February, the Four Seasons conservation team supervises evening turtle observation sessions at the active nesting beaches. Guests are briefed before departure and guided by staff who monitor every nest.

Conservation & sourcing

Desroches Island is a protected nesting site for hawksbill and green turtles. The Four Seasons team monitors all nesting activity across the island's 14km of beach and guests are invited to join supervised observation sessions during the season (October to February). The island's reef health is monitored quarterly by an independent marine biologist retained by the property.
